Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4 April 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was a sole child. Scott graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott took classes in secondary teaching in Temple University. She was hoping to be a English teacher at high school. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of the college. She started her career as a spoken word artist, performing her own work during live poetry readings. She eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by them. During Roots' performance, she revealed herself as an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. While on the Canada tour for the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experience performing. She was signed by the label's first artist.
